Why Lorem Ipsum Still Matters in Modern Design

It's been the standard placeholder text since the 1500s. Here's why designers still reach for it — and the alternatives that don't work as well.

Every designer has used it. Most developers have copy-pasted it. Almost nobody knows what it actually says. "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" — the standard placeholder text that's filled mockups since the 1500s — remains ubiquitous in modern design workflows, even as tools have evolved far beyond Aldus PageMaker.

Why does this anachronistic Latin-ish text persist? And why do the alternatives — real content, random words, AI-generated copy — fall short?

What Lorem Ipsum actually is

The text is a scrambled version of a passage from Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. An anonymous typesetter in the 1500s took Cicero's text, scrambled the words to make it nonsensical, and used it as a placeholder in a type specimen book.

The original passage translates as: "Neither is there anyone who loves grief itself since it is grief and so wants to obtain it." The lorem ipsum version strips out the meaning while preserving the visual rhythm of Latin prose.

The fact that it's nonsensical is the point. Placeholder text shouldn't say anything — it should look like text without inviting the reader to actually read it.

Why Latin-like text works

There are several reasons lorem ipsum remains the default placeholder:

Visual rhythm. Latin has a distinctive distribution of word lengths and letter frequencies. The average word in lorem ipsum is 6-7 characters, with a mix of long and short words that fills the visual space of body text naturally. Random English words ("the cat sat on the mat the cat") feel choppy and uneven.

Neutral meaning. Because it's not a real language (despite looking like one), lorem ipsum doesn't distract. Readers see "text" without parsing it. If you used real English ("This is placeholder text that will be replaced later"), readers would actually read it, breaking their attention.

Familiarity. Designers, developers, and clients recognize lorem ipsum instantly. It signals "this is a placeholder, don't critique the content." Real content invites critique; lorem ipsum deflects it.

Word length distribution. English words are shorter on average than Latin. A paragraph of English text looks sparser than the same word count of lorem ipsum. The Latin-like distribution fills the visual space of a paragraph more naturally.

The alternatives and why they fail

1. Random English words. Generators that produce "word salad" — random dictionary words — fail because real text has structure. Sentences, paragraphs, connective words. Random words look like noise, not text.

2. Repetitive filler. "Content goes here. Content goes here. Content goes here." — useful in early wireframes where you literally just want to show "there is content here." But it doesn't show how text wraps, what a paragraph looks like, or how line lengths affect readability.

3. Real content from the client. This is the gold standard — real content gives the most accurate picture of how the final design will look. But clients rarely have content ready when design starts. Waiting for content delays design; using placeholder lets design proceed.

4. AI-generated placeholder. Modern LLMs can generate topical, plausible-sounding text in seconds. The risk: it looks so real that clients may mistake it for final copy. Lorem ipsum's obvious nonsense is a feature, not a bug.

5. Bilingual or non-Latin scripts. For testing multilingual layouts, lorem ipsum is insufficient — you also need placeholder Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. Each script has different word lengths, line heights, and wrapping behaviors.

When to use Lorem ipsum vs. real content

The choice depends on the design phase:

Wireframing and early mockups: Use lorem ipsum. The goal is to establish layout, hierarchy, and information architecture. Real content would distract from these structural decisions.

Detailed design and prototypes: Use real content where possible, lorem ipsum for the rest. As the design solidifies, replace placeholders with the actual copy you'll ship.

User testing: Always use real content. Users react differently to placeholder text — they don't read it, they don't form opinions about it, and they can't tell you whether the messaging works. Lorem ipsum in user testing hides problems you'll only discover after launch.

Client presentations: Use real content. Clients can't separate design from content — if they see lorem ipsum, they'll spend the meeting asking what the final copy will say, instead of evaluating the design.

The variants

There are several variants of lorem ipsum:

These are fun but introduce a problem: they're memorable. A designer reading "artisanal beard bicycle" is distracted; a designer reading "lorem ipsum dolor" sees only text.

Generating the right amount

The other question is quantity. How much placeholder do you need?

Most lorem ipsum generators let you choose the unit. A common pattern is to start each paragraph with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" (the recognizable opening) and follow with randomized Cicero-derived text.

The classic "start with Lorem ipsum" option preserves the visual signature that signals "this is placeholder." Without that signature, lorem ipsum is indistinguishable from real Latin — and readers might mistake it for final content.

Beyond placeholder: using Lorem ipsum for testing

Lorem ipsum has uses beyond mockups:

Performance testing. Generate a 10,000-word lorem ipsum document and load it into your text editor or CMS. Measure render time, scroll performance, and memory usage. This stress-tests your system with realistic text.

Layout testing. Different languages have different character distributions, which affects layout. Generate lorem ipsum in Latin, Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese scripts to test that your layout handles different scripts correctly.

SEO testing. Lorem ipsum doesn't trigger keyword filters, so it's useful for testing how your CMS handles text without polluting your analytics with real keywords.

Print testing. Print a page with lorem ipsum to verify pagination, margins, and font rendering without the distraction of trying to read the content.

The ethics of placeholder

There's a strain of design thinking that says lorem ipsum is harmful — that it lets designers avoid thinking about content, leading to designs that don't work with real content.

This critique has merit. A design that looks great with lorem ipsum but breaks with real headlines, long URLs, or unusual character counts is a design that hasn't been tested properly. Real content has quirks — long words, unusual character ratios, varying paragraph lengths — that placeholder text doesn't capture.

The right approach: use lorem ipsum early in the process, then transition to real content as soon as possible. Don't ship a design that's never been tested with the actual copy.

Generating placeholder locally

Most online lorem ipsum generators are simple — they just produce randomized text from a fixed wordlist. The privacy implications are minimal, but if you're generating placeholder for an internal product (where even the existence of the project is confidential), running the generator locally is safer.

TextOpal's Lorem Ipsum Generator lets you choose words, sentences, or paragraphs, set the count, and optionally start with the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" opening. Everything runs in your browser — no input is transmitted.

The future of placeholder text

AI tools like ChatGPT can generate topical placeholder text in seconds — "write 200 words about enterprise software pricing" produces plausible-sounding copy that fits any layout. Some designers are starting to use this instead of lorem ipsum, arguing that topical placeholder is more useful than nonsense.

The tradeoff: AI text is realistic enough that clients may mistake it for final copy. If you use AI-generated placeholder, label it explicitly as "draft" or "placeholder" to avoid confusion.

For most use cases, classic lorem ipsum remains the right choice. It's instantly recognizable as placeholder, it fills space naturally, and it doesn't distract from design decisions. Until someone invents a better placeholder, Cicero's scrambled prose will continue to fill our mockups.
